New Astros owner Jim Crane ended a week of speculation as he summoned attention on not just a local level but a national one as welll when he publicly contemplated changing the name of the Houston Astros.
In a video message to Astros’ season ticket holders he told them he had listened to what they had to say:“You asked for change and we added several fan friendly initiatives last week and we hope you like them,” Crane said. “We will continue to listen, and to look for additional ways to improve on and off the field.
“One thing that we are not going to change is the name. We received strong feedback and consensus among season ticket holders and many fans, and we will not change the name Astros. The Houston Astros are here to stay.”
Crane had said he was considering changing the name of the Astros last week; he also announced lower ticket prices and the end of the ban on outside food at Minute Maid Park.
Consideration is still being given to changes in uniforms and field (including Tal’s Hill); the changes in uniform would be for the Astros’ first year in the American League in 2013.
