North Forest ISD To Remain Independent For Another Year

According to school officials, the North Forest School District will not merge with the Houston Independent School District this summer as originally planned; at least the merger will not take place for the coming school year.
The Texas Education Agency stepped in last July and stated that academic performance and financial trouble were two of the greatest factors that meant that the North Forest District had to dissolve. The Houston Independent School District was ordered to annex North Forest ISD’s 7,500 students, effective July 1, 2012.
However, according to the Texas Education Commissioner North Forest has been given another year to make improvements to its status. Although North Forest ISD is still in the revoke stage, the revoke has been placed on hold.
Additional reports indicate that the TEA will reassess North Forest ISD’s progress next summer to gather information on the school district’s progress. According to the North Forest website, the district is home to one high school (North Forest High School), two middle schools (B.C. Elmore and Forest Brook Middle School) and six elementary schools. Those elementary schools include: Fonwood Elementary School, Hillard Elementary School, Lakewood Elementary School, Rogers Elementary School, Shadydale Elementary School and Thurgood Marshall Early Childhood Center.
