(SUNRISE, Fla.) — Stephen Weiss scored the first two playoff goals of his career, and the Florida Panthers won their first playoff game since 1997, beating the New Jersey Devils, 4-2, and tying the series at one game apiece.
Weiss, who has spent his entire 10 year career with the Panthers, scored both of his goals on the Power Play.
“Nice to get the Monkey off your back,” Weiss said. “A couple tap ins don’t hurt either. That’s a great job by Sammy (Mikael Samuelsson) getting the puck to the net on the first one, and anytime you get a five on three you want to capitalize. We were able to do that.”
The Panthers got out to a 3-0 lead before allowing the Devils to close within one.
New Jersey’s Ilya Kovalchuck had a chance to score with 7.6 seconds left, but the shot was blocked and Florida’s Tomas Fleischmann scored an empty netter as time expired.
