Despite a sun filled sky after light rain late Saturday, Republican Party officials decided to cancel Monday’s proceedings. As a result, a quarter of the Republican National Convention has been canceled due to Tropical Storm Isaac.

Gulf Coast residents that live in the Florida Keys braced for the possibility that Tropical Storm Isaac could strengthen into a dangerous hurricane by the time it makes landfall there.

Isaac is expected to turn northwest and strike as a Category Two hurricane somewhere between New Orleans and the Florida Panhandle on Wednesday. That day marks the seventh anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.

The National Hurricane Center issued a hurricane warning for a large portion of the northern Gulf Coast from east of Morgan City, La. — which includes New Orleans — to Destin, Fla. A Category Two hurricane contains sustained winds between 96 and 110 mph or 154 to 177 kph.

Louisiana’s Governor Bobby Jindal called a state of emergency and suggested that people begin leaving low-lying parts of Louisiana.

Even before reaching hurricane strength, Isaac has posed a threat to residents in Florida. More than 500 flights were canceled over the weekend out of Miami International Airport and about 150 from Fort Lauderdale’s airport.

Wind gusts of 60 mph were reported as far north as Pompano Beach, north of Fort Lauderdale. Residents in southeast Florida were urged to stay home.

With much uncertainty about its path, Isaac is expected to draw significant strength and stamina from the warm, open waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Its expected to become a more organized system Monday through Wednesday.
