I will admit it. It came so naturally for me. Walking in high heels was something I was looking forward to and practiced doing as a young child in my mother’s closet. For many of us we look tall, sexy and sophisticated walking in our high heels. For some of us walking in heels takes a bit of practice. So whether you have your first or 50th pair of high heels let’s “strut our stuff” effortlessly! Here are some great tips for those that need them when it comes to walking in heels.
Start Small & End Tall
If you are a beginner in walking in heels, begin with small heels first. Two inches is a great length for beginners. There are many heels to choose from, varying in height, thickness and shape. It’s important to train your feet and allow your ankles to develop the strength they need to walk safely, stylishly and gracefully in high heels.
Carefully Choose Your Shoes
Not all high-heeled shoes are created the same. If you see an attractive pair of heels, try them on. Walk in them for a a few moments. Are they comfortable? Do they rub up against your small toe or big toe or heel? Here is a test of strength: Stand in your shoes on a hard floor with your knees straight. Check to see if you are able to raise yourself on your toes an inch. If you cannot do such, then the heels are too high for you right now, and you shouldn’t wear them. That does not mean you will never be able to wear them. So have confidence if you aim to wear tall heels one day.
Walking…The Art Form
Walking in heels is very different from walking in shoes. If you are new to the world of heels, be patient with yourself and allow yourself to “feel the heel”. Walk with abbreviated steps and walk with confidence. Take small, slow steps and making sure you do not to bend your knees any more than you normally would. Practice walking up and down stairs. Stairs can be tricky so breathe and allow one foot to ascend or descend as you walk up or down stairs. Place one foot in front of the other and soon you will conquer your stairs. Take your time riding an escalator. Escalator rides can be tricky even in sneakers!
Practice, Practice & Practice
When you purchase that first pair of heels and you are assured of a great fit, practice wearing the heels at home first before you hit the public. Walk around the house in your heels and look at yourself in the mirror. How is your posture? How are your legs positioned? Try walking away from your mirror backwards as well as forwards. Change direction, stop, turn around, pivot. Do all of the things you normally do in flat shoes. Become “one with your heels”.
Add Cushion When & Where Needed
Check your local drug store for great cushions. Do you need padding in the heel area or on your baby toe? Try your shoes on and allow your feet to “talk to you”.
Take a Break!
We want your feet to stay beautiful an bunion free so take a break from wearing heels everyday! Try opting for a great fall flat shoe in addition to your heels. Allow your shoes to take a break from the height. Your feet and toes will certainly thank you for it.
