A woman charged with injury to a child after said she hit her younger sister for eating a bag of Cheetos faced a judge Thursday in Houston.
Deby Mejia, 23, donned an orange jumpsuit in the courtroom of Judge Kent Ellis, where bond was set at $35,000. Ellis said probable cause was found in the case. Prosecutor Akilah Mance told the court Mejia is not remorseful and did not think she had done anything wrong.
Here’s NEWS 92 FM’S Pattie Sheih with more on the attack, apparently triggered by a bag of Cheetos:
Court documents state Mejia went to the store while the 10-year-old victim went to a neighbor’s apartment to get a bag of Cheetos. When Mejia found her sister eating the Cheetos upon returning, she beat her with an extension cord several times before banging her head on the ground and kicking her after she fell.
A police officer at the child’s school saw the bruising and bump on her head and called Child Protective Services. This may not be the first time the little girl has been hit, officials said. A doctor told Houston Police the patterns on the child’s body reveal previous injuries.
Mejia has cared for the victim since their mother was deported to Honduras six years ago. Documents reveal Mejia said she resents her sister for being born and never loved her.
The girl is now in Child Protective Services custody.
