A Houston police officer trying to chase a couple of suspicious people overnight in southwest Houston ended up making a much bigger discovery–more than 20 illegal immigrants packed in the back of a U-Haul van.
The discovery happened around 1:30 this morning on Edgemoor near Hillcroft. Police say patrol officers suspected the van may have stolen merchandise inside after noticing a few people gathered around the van. The suspects ran away when approached by the officers and that is when the suspected immigrants where found.
Police took them inside a suspected stash house to warm up. 17 males, 5 females and 2 juvenile males were among those taken into custody, Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Gregory Palmore said.
Thirteen of the immigrants were from Mexico, 4 Honduran, 2 Guatemalan, and 5 El Salvadorian.
