Chalk up another win for the Port of Houston with a big announcement. News 92 FM Business Editor Brent Clanton reports:
“If you build it, they will come.”
More than a hook-phrase in a Kevin Costner movie, it’s the operational premise of the Port of Houston Authority in working to secure two major cruise lines for regular service to the Bayport Cruise Terminal in Pasadena.
“Princess Cruise will start in November of 2013, and that’s followed by Norwegian Cruise line in November of 20-14,” said Port Authority Executive Director Leonard Waterworth, who is very optimistic about the future. “Exactly how the marketplace reacts to it, exactly what you’ll see in the area, it’s hard for me to anticipate, but we will have economic impact in and around the Cruise Terminal.”
The Port Authority calculates $200 million will be generated when the cruise service begins next fall, and the ball for ancillary development has already been set in motion.
“We have people starting the conversation on ‘how do we build the community?’ ‘How do you bring entertainment venues?’ ‘How do you bring attractions in and around that area?'” Waterworth said.
Everything from parking lots to hotels and restaurants are in the works, with just a year before the first cruise liner calls.
