A Massachusetts woman’s career is on the line after a Facebook group demands her ouster for desecrating a national memorial to unidentified American soldiers killed in action.
Lindsey Stone, of Plymouth, posted a photo of herself pretending to scream and flip the bird at the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier on Facebook, Metro Online reports.
The photo, taken while on a business trip to Virginia last month by a co-worker, has since stirred thousands of Facebook users to petition Living Independently Forever, Inc., a Hyannis-based non-profit focused on assisting persons with learning disabilities, to fire Stone.
That organization announced today both she and her co-worker were placed on unpaid leave, and said her actions did not represent their work in the community.
Stone, meanwhile, defended her actions in another Facebook post this morning.
“This is just us…challenging authority in general,” she wrote. “Much like the pic posted the night before, or me smoking right next to a no smoking sign. OBVIOUSLY (sic) we meant NO disrespect to the people that serve or have served our country.”
