The Department of Public Safety has released its report on the Thanksgiving Day pileup near Beaumont.

NEWS 92 FM’s Steve Ottesen has this report on the fatal crash:

The report claims thick fog combined with speed and a series of chain reaction collisions were responsible for the pileup.

By the time it was over, DPS says at least 95 vehicles were involved in 18 separate accidents along the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10.

Dozens of people were transported to local hospitals, including the Leggio’s of Pearland, said Deputy Rod Carroll, with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Like many of those involved, the accident report claims Vincent Leggio swerved to avoid stopped traffic, slammed into another vehicle and was then hit by an 18-wheeler.

Both he and his wife, Debra Leggio, died from their injuries.

Those covering the accident found it unbelievable there were only two fatalities.

It took wrecker crews all day to clear the accident site.

The Houston Chronicle reports the Leggio family has filed a lawsuit against the driver of the 18-wheeler and his employer, the CR England company, claiming negligence.
