A suspected shoplifter is dead after being shot by a Harris County deputy.
NEWS 92 FM’s Pattie Shieh tells us authorities are still investigating, but neighbors are talking:
Two women were in the Walmart at West Rd., and the North Freeway late Thursday night. Store employees say they saw the pair shoplifting, so they alerted an off-duty Harris County deputy who was working security.
But when he approached the women in the parking lot, the driver hit the gas, almost dragging the deputy who was at the door of the vehicle. That’s when the deputy fired.
The driver traveled about a mile to the Worthington on the Beltway apartments on Greens Parkway. That’s where the women live.
Angel Gaines just moved in downstairs from the women. She heard tires squealing and stepped outside.
“She was screaming ‘somebody got shot,’she’s gonna die’,” Gaines said, adding, “She came up there parked right there by me. She said some security officer shot her on West Rd.”
Gaines described the passenger as a young woman with a gunshot wound. She recognized her as her upstairs neighbor, and said she is a mother.
She told the driver to call 911.
Another neighbor, who did not want to give her name, says the passenger was conscious.
“She wasn’t really talking loud or anything like that, but you can hear her because there wasn’t anyone else in there,” the neighbor said. “She was kind of like crying and hurting at the same time.”
But according to some neighbors, the passenger refused medical treatment. She died at the scene.
What’s curious is both women we spoke with also saw the driver carrying bags up to her third floor apartment.
“I seen her take like one or two bags, and then by that time she came down and other people was there, and then that’s when the ambulance pulled up and a couple of cops and she didn’t touch anything else,” the neighbor said.
