With a nondescript exterior and scant dining room indoors–maximum capacity of 49, according to a fire marshal’s posting behind the front register– Teotihuacan on Irvington Blvd., is likely one of those places which would have blurred into the background as I drove by had I not been invited.
In a city where Mexican restaurants outnumber McDonald’s, you might spend your entire life in Houston without visiting all of them. While there are the obvious favorites around the Bayou City, there are also some non-starters.
Sitting with a date and their colleagues from Sam Houston Math, Science and Technology Center High School last night, I found good company and an experience somewhere in between the two: food worth returning for, but unlikely my first choice when presented with other options.
Authentic Mexican food is hard to come by in a town full of Tex-Mex, and Teotihuacan’s menu reflects the perfect meshing of palates as diverse as its clientele.
Fundido provides a great starting course, as a table of friends stuff savory beef fajita and melted Monterey Jack cheese into warm tortillas.
A plate of enchiladas verdes offers a veritable feast as the chef layers two corn tortillas with heaping portions of spicy green tomatillo sauce, onions, Monterey Jack cheese and sour cream with your choice of grilled chicken, carnitas or beef fajitas. (Succulent grilled chicken, however, is highly recommended.)
Perhaps the best thing on the menu might just be their salsas and the service, which is above par for most Mexican restaurants.
Parking is sparse and neighboring businesses threaten to tow your vehicle, so hit the cafe up during non-peak hours or prepare to arrive early for dinner.
