We’ve all heard of the five-second rule for food dropped on the floor, but how safe is it, really? NEWS 92 FM’s Martha Martinez checks in:
Depending on where you are, you might feel safe going with the five-second rule,or maybe the three-second rule if we’re feeling a little extra cautious. But the sad fact is that no matter how clean that floor might look, unless it’s just been unwrapped from a sterile coating, it’s probably contaminated with bacteria that can hop onto your goodies almost instantaneously.
A University of Arizona study revealed that about 90 percent of our shoes are contaminated with fecal matter after only three months of wear. Now, if you think about it, you very likely have also touched your footwear while putting it on or taking it off, so that same fecal matter is on your hands and everything you touch, from doorknobs to telephones to the wrapper around that snack you just ripped into.
I won’t even get into what happens when those of you who do so place your shoes or boots on a table! No wonder our grannies said it was bad luck.
