Three weeks ago, the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary shocked the nation and one prominent Houston sports figure immediately decided he wanted to do something to help the residents of Newtown, Conn. News 92 FM’s Brian Shannon has the story.
Houston Dynamo President and Connecticut native Chris Canetti says Newtown is a hotbed for youth soccer and wanted to bring some happiness to the town with a unique event.
So who signed up? Over 50 players, including Brian Ching and Brad Davis of the Dynamo and the San Jose Earthquake’s Marcus Tracy who grew up in Newtown and his mother taught at Sandy Hook.
The response from the community has been overwhelming and the players and organizers are happy with how things are shaping up.
The event is only open to Newtown residents and members of the Newtown Youth Soccer Club and will be held Monday.
