There are lots of local events this weekend and on Monday to honor the slain civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr. From fun activities for the family to fund raisers for area charities, there are plenty of ways to celebrate Dr. King’s legacy. News 92 FM’s Carolyn Campbell has a preview:
Take care of yourself and your family at the Black Heritage Society’s MLK community health fair and youth concert Saturday, January 19 at MacGregor park from 10 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
If music is your thing, you don’t want to miss the Toyota Battle of the Bands competition, Saturday, January 19th at 4 p.m. at Joe Kelly Butler Stadium on South Main.
The 7th annual MLK Youth Parade will kick off at noon on Saturday. It will start in mid-town near the Houston community college central campus on San Jacinto and Elgin.
Want to help out in honor of Dr. King? Well the MLK “Feed the Hungry” food drive starts at 10 a.m. Sunday, January 20 at St. John’s United Methodist Church Cathedral Hall on West Gray.
If you haven’t seen the MLK statue, here’s your chance at the MacGregor park MLK statue and park plaza dedication. It begins at 4 p.m. Sunday, January 20 at MacGregor park.
The 19th Annual MLK Grande Parade will take place Monday, January 21 at 10 a.m. near the Houston community college central campus. The parade will make its way down San Jacinto Street, from Elgin to Webster.
The 35th Annual original MLK Jr. Birthday parade takes place Monday, January 21 at 10 a.m. starting at minute maid park downtown.
The Houston MLK birthday Celebration and Community Festival will follow the downtown parade, Monday, January 21 at Discovery Green Park. The fun and festivities will continue until 8 p.m.
