A recently released report by a Criminal Justice Coalition indicates African Americans in Harris County may be treated unfairly when it comes to drug crimes. News 92 FM’s Carolyn Campbell has more:
After taking a hard look at the numbers, the Texas criminal justice coalition says there’s a disproportionate enforcement of drug policies in Harris County when it comes to African Americans.
Last year African Americans accounted for half of the felony drug possession arrests in Harris County and 65 percent of the state jail and prison population, yet African Americans made up only 19.3 percent of the total population of Harris County. Bernhart says that has a negative impact on the African-American community.
