A very special program hits a homerun with children in the Houston area. News 92 fm’s Pattie Shieh visits with those on the giving and receiving end of the spring spirit:
“I thought we were just going to play baseball and have games,” said Erasmo Castillo. The 14-year-old got to do more than just play baseball thanks to Spring Spirit, a program that gives underprivileged children the chance to get on the diamond.
The 14-year-old remembers the first time he stepped on the field in Spring Branch.
“I was overwhelmed because they’re really nice,” Castillo said. He is one of 100 players who use the facility every day. “They teach you about life the experiences you had and are going to have, they teach you about God.”
Castillo was thrilled to meet baseball great, former houston astro and keynote speaker Lance Berkman at the annual fundraising breakfast.
“He’s like my idol and I look up to him,” Castillo said. “I’m a first baseman too and he gave me tips.”
It’s not just about the great american pastime.
“There are many life lessons learned on the athletic field,” Berkman said.
He calls it a mandate from God to reach out to those who could use a helping hand.
“To me, it’s opportunity. It’s a ray of hope to say, ‘Hey, this is an avenue through which we can learn the skills to better our situation.'”
With the grass under their feet and gloves in hand, these children learn about perseverance, reward and achievement. All through the sport of baseball.
