Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images(ST. LOUIS) — St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher Chris Carpenter may have thrown his last pitch in the majors, according to general manager John Mozeliak and manager Mike Matheny.

The pair announced on Tuesday that the 37-year-old Carpenter would most likely miss the entire 2013 season because of a recurring nerve injury that forced him to miss most of last season.

“I think he felt like to some degree that he was letting us down,” Mozeliak said. “I assured him that was further from the truth and that we were grateful for everything he has done for the organization.”

Carpenter told the team he will undergo further evaluation before making a decision on retirement.

The three-time All-Star won the National League Cy Young Award in 2005, posting a 21-5 record along with a 2.83 ERA.
