It’s Burn Awareness Week. Did you know that one of the premier burn centers in the world just minutes away? News 92 FM’s Kevin Charles takes a look at the Shriners Burns Hospital in Galveston:
It was almost destroyed in 2008 by Hurricane Ike. In fact, the cost of repairs and the financial situation the country’s economy was in, left the Shriners National Hospital Board with little option but to mothball the facility. But the Shriners National Convention said no. They voted to repair and reopen the hospital so it could continue its great work which includes treating burn patients from around the world and conducting research like no other on dealing with the pain and scarring left behind by serious burn injuries.
There are currently four Shriners hospitals that specialize in burns: Galveston, Boston, Cincinnati and Sacramento.
They have been at the lead of burn care research for the past 50 years. With innovations in artificial skin, air beds and nutrition techniques to help burn victims. But the hospital’s chief of staff says that’s not all.
Dr. David Herndon says the technological advances being made at Shriner’s Hospitals are truly amazing.
Tomorrow we take a look at how the Shriners Burn Hospitals handle the personal side of burn care.
