The state education commissioner recommends the troubled North Forest school district be closed and annexed by Houston ISD. NEWS 92 FM’s Pattie Shieh reports.
Texas Education Agency spokesperson Debbie Ratcliffe supports Commissioner Michael Williams‘ decision, saying it’s time to act.
“Students that graduated or continued high school for a fifth year, North Forest has a 66 percent completion rate and the state requirement to be acceptable is 75 percent,” Ratcliffe said.
The TEA’s recommendation does not sit well with attorney Chris Tritico, who represents North Forest.
Tritico says North Forest will use every means available to fight what he calls a “wrongful closure,” and he says that includes state and federal court.
“It’s unfortunate that the commissioner of education chose to have discussions with the Houston Independent School District and the media without notifying the North Forest Independent School District of his decision,” Tritico said.
