The Bryan community joined together for a candlelight vigil to honor two fallen firefighters and offer support to the families of two others who are recovering.

Friday’s fire claimed the lives of two longtime members of the Bryan Fire Department. Lt. Eric Wallace, a 12-year-veteran, died at a Bryan hospital shortly after the building that was on fire collapsed. Lt. Greg Pickard, 54, died Saturday at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

At a candlelight vigil, Howard Tipton with the Bryan Fire Department fought back tears as he talked about the lives lost.

“Our wives sacrifice every time they kiss us and send us off to work, hoping we’ll return safely. Our children sacrifice when Daddy can’t be at every event because no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t get the night off. The other night, Greg and Eric sacrificed their lives in service to our community,” Tipton said.

Two other firefighters who were part of the rapid intervention team who pulled out Lt. Wallace remain in critical condition at UTMB in Galveston.

Rickey Mantey, 30, and rookie Mitchel Moran, 21, are both recovering in the burn unit.
