Emancipation Park will celebrate it’s 141st anniversary this summer and plans are underway to renovate the park with a new gym, community center and swimming pool.
News 92 FM’s Matt Sampsell tells us Houston Mayor Annise Parker has big plans for the third ward treasure.
“Emancipation Park is undergoing a renaissance that will make it a destination park for today,” Parker said, adding that she feels the park is one of Houston’s most critical parks.
Originally purchased by freed slaves in 1872 for$800 dollars, the park has been a city park for the past 93 years.
“We’re going to respect the history,” Parker explained. “But we’re going to make a new park for future generations.”
Parker attended an event at the part today to support the friends of Emancipation Park and continue the fund raising efforts to reach it’s goal of $33 million.
“What today is about is a rededication of the people who have been carrying the torch for many years, just to keep this park alive,” Parker said. “To tell them they are not alone, that we still need their help and input. We need the community stake holders to continue to stay with us as we move forward to the future.”
