Houston police officers responded to more than 27,000 calls concerning people with mental issues. Sometimes those calls involve gun play. And when it does, that weapon is held in the property room.
The concern over people with mental health issues and firearms is being discussed in Austin. Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland supports stricter laws.
The chief says he doesn’t want to take away anyone’s gun, as long as they are legally and mentally qualified to do so.
“Because of HIPPA laws and medical privacy issues, I have no way of knowing does this person still qualify to still carry a firearm, but when they show up at the property room, I have no choice but to give it back,” McClelland said.
