Today is the day that we come together as a nation to celebrate the cocktail known as the “margarita.” News 92 FM’s Maria Todd reports on how Houston is celebrating National Margarita Day:

Tequila. Yes, that’s the main ingredient in a margarita. It accounts for 50 percent of the drink, according to the international bartender’s association. It also contains 29 percent orange liqueur and 21 percent fresh lime juice, served in a traditional margarita glass with a salted rim.

How the drink was invented has as many stories as there are variations on the recipe. Here’s the Houston version of the story: In 1948 in Galveston at the legendary Balinese Room, head bartender Santos Cruz created the margarita for singer Peggy Lee who’s given name was Margaret. He supposedly named it after the Spanish version of her name and the cocktail has been a hit ever since. Another version claims it’s a Mexican take on an American cocktail called the “daisy,” substituting tequila for brandy. Margarita means daisy in Spanish.

Whatever story you believe, or variations you like, the main thing is to celebrate this day responsible so that you don’t end up regretting it later.

Here is a list of local spots with celebratory specials on margaritas:
