President Obama wants to map the human brain.
Today, President Obama announced a $100M, federally-funded initiative that would aid scientists in finding out what makes our brains work and how certain diseases could be prevented and cured.
Neurologist Paul Schulz works at UT Health Science Center in Houston’s Medical Center.
He says increased funding could help lead to a cure to Alzheimer’s.
Schulz says other benefits could lead to treating and curing autism, epilepsy, schizophrenia and severe brain concussions or traumatic stress.
This is a great initiative for focusing money, but also public policy and the public’s awareness of neurological disease and how common it is and the fact that we might be able to do something about it with a just few more federal dollars,” Schulz said. “So I think it’s really valuable in that regard.”
