Sen. Ted Cruz, Texas’ freshman senator and Tea Party darling, placed sixth amongst Iowans who responded to a new Republican presidential poll, according to Public Policy Polling Thursday.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who announced Monday he would not seek re-election, was not included in the poll.

Ten percent of Iowans chose Cruz from a field of candidates which also include front runner Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former vice presidential candidate and U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan, and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio.

Although Cruz is not well known, he is viewed more favorably than other candidates, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Cruz also has a large gender gap. Men are more than twice as likely as women to know who he is — and they’re twice as supportive. Cruz is backed by 13 percent of Iowa Republican men and 7 percent of women.
