KATY, TX (CoveringKaty.com) – Up until about a year and a half ago, Katy resident, Laura Kay Ethetton had no physical problems. The 50 year old had achieved a third degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and was nationally ranked. She is a geoscientist in the oil and gas industry. Then she started experiencing a lot muscle and joint pain. It was hard to get out of bed in the morning. She was having balance problems, difficulty moving. At first doctors couldn’t pin down the exact cause of the problems she was experiencing.
She finally found a rheumatologist who through the correct blood tests diagnosed her as having Lupus.
The doctor gave her two choices of medicine treatments: “One, you can attack the disease with really heavy, powerful medications that have a lot of side effects, or go the slow route with other medications. I opted for the slow route,” said Ms. Ethetton.
But the slow route was very slow, plus some of the medications she was taking had some nasty side effects.
“I was thinking, okay what can I do to try and get my muscles and joints to work again? I had to fight this thing and get proactive, get moving, and stay moving.”
She knew about the Katy Family YMCA, 22807 Westheimer Parkway. As she drove by she could always see that it was crowded. She made up her mind to visit the YMCA and see what was going on.
“They showed me all around, but they also gave me a one month trial membership. I got to try out the yoga class and the Pilates class before I actually took out a permanent membership,” said Ms. Ethetton.
