If you would like to work as a roustabout on an oil rig out in the Gulf of Mexico, Houston Community College has the perfect course for you.
HCC’S Dr. Lee Hunt says they are developing an intensive 2-week training program that will place people on the fast track to a good paying job.
He says “we are talking people who can go from high school to a 70-thousand dollar a year job working six months a year, within two weeks.”
Hunt says HCC will have a replica of certain aspects of an off shore oil rig on campus, to help the students master the skills they’ll need.
He says this is essential “to give them practical real time experience daily.”
Hunt says the oil industry has an urgent need to train and staff some 140 new offshore drilling rigs under construction.
The new program’s goal is to produce better trained candidates for the drilling industry. People who are technically educated, who have safety skills and who will be in a better position to earn promotions.
