(HOUSTON, TX)–The man who will be the keynote speaker for Houston’s Veterans Day celebrations was part of an interesting even in American historyMajor General Robert Ivany once carried the so called “nuclear football” according to Buddy Grantham of Houston’s Office of Veterans Affairs.  The nuclear football is always close to the president in the event he needs to call a nuclear strike.

Not only did he play football at West Point, but he carried the football for President Reagan so he had the nuclear codes.”

The general he held the job when Reagan made a now famous joke prior to radio session in 1984.

“I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever.  We begin bombing in 5 minutes.”

Reagan was joking but his words were heard by the Russians and it took 30 minutes for them to be convinced he was just joking.  It’s been a long time since General Ivany carried the nuclear codes.  Today he serves as president of the University of Saint Thomas.
