An off-duty Houston Firefighter came to the aid of a truck driver whose truck had caught fire due to the brakes overheating.

It happened Monday evening as HFD Captain Craig Moreau of Station 41 was driving back from Austin with his wife. They spotted the flames coming from the truck and stopped to help. Moreau says the driver was trying to put out the fire with a tiny fire extinguisher.

Here’s a description of what happened next in his own words from his Facebook posting about the incident:

“Tonight Jamie and I were driving home on 71 and an beside us an 18 wheeler caught on fire. His rear brakes had locked up and were flaming pretty good. We pulled over to help, and got to him as he was starting to spray his tiny extinguisher from the outside of the tire. The flames were coming from the inside, so I took the extinguisher from him and crawled under the truck. The rest of the extinguisher knocked down the flames, but it quickly re-ignited.

“I asked him what was inside and he said BEER, its all BEER. Just then, the inside tire exploded. I told him to open it up and hand me the beers as fast as he could. I shook them up, and popped a top one at a time until the fire was out and the brakes were cool. Thankfully they were tall-boys. I couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of it all, he was so shaken up that the humor escaped him.

“Had he been carrying anything other than easy to dispense liquids I am sure the truck would have burned to the ground”
