Houston Mayor Annise Parker has married her long time partner Kathy Hubbard.
Mayor Parker and Hubbard were married Thursday in Palm Springs, California on their 23rd anniversary as a couple.
Texas has a ban on same sex marriages and the Mayor had previously said she would not marry until it was legal to do so in this state.
University of Houston Political Science Professor Brandon Rottinghaus says political realities may have forced the mayor to change her mind.
He says “the wait for that ban to be lifted may take a very long time and may not occur even in the lifetime of many people.”
Mayor Parker has made it clear that her spouse will not participate or benefit from the city of Houston policy granting health insurance benefits to spouses of legally married city employees.
Rottinghaus says “she is trying to forestall that as an issue, an you know keep it as a sort of purely as a kind of private matter.”
He says the Mayor is trying to ensure she is not perceived as benefiting from a policy she put in place.
