Barbara Bush Elementary Cleared After Suspicious Package Found

(HOUSTON) — A suspicious backpack at Houston’s Bush Elementary School this morning turned out to be harmless.

The backpack was found on the school grounds on Westerloch Dr. in West hHouston. Houston firefighters and Houston Police remained on the scene until the all-clear was given.

No word on who the backpack belonged to or what was inside of it.

An unattended backpack prompts an evacuation at a Houston elementary school.

The Houston Fire Department responded to a suspicious package call at Barbara Bush Elementary at 6:57 a.m. Thursday, and the school was evacuated.

“At HISD threats made against a student or a campus are taken seriously,” a Houston Independent School District statement read.  “As such, HISD Police and HPD are working together to ensure there is a safe environment for students and staff. Parents of students are being notified of the situation.”

A bomb squad has yet to arrive on the scene, but is en route. We’ll bring you more as the story develops.
