Undocumented children from Central America seeking refuge in the U.S. may be vulnerable to people promising legal representation they can not deliver.
The State Bar of Texas is warning people who want help on immigration matters to be careful not to fall victim to people who falsely represent themselves as lawyers.
Leland de la Garza heads up the state bar’s “Unauthorized Practice of Law Committee.” He says immigrants desperate for legal help could be preyed upon.
de la Garza says “it will come, simply because we have a great number of unauthorized practice of law cases, involving immigration. And so if right now the crisis is minors, it is going to happen.”
He says as a result children could miss opportunities to gain legal status, and their families could be swindled out of money.
de la Garza says people can verify whether a person is a qualified licensed attorney by checking with the state bar of Texas. For additional information you can check out http://www.texasbar.com/findalawyer
