Challenger’s first mission, STS-6, launched on April 4, 1983. Thereafter, the shuttle became a major part of NASA’s space exploration strategy, flying more missions per year than Columbia. In fact, 85 percent of all missions from 1983-1984 were flown by Challenger.

The Challenger began operation on its maiden flight on April 4, 1983, and flew nine missions before the accident for which it is best known. The Space Shuttle orbiter exploded over Cape Canaveral, Fla., on January 28, 1986, killing all seven crew members on board. The Challenger was NASA’s second Space Shuttle after the Columbia.
