The Challenger began operation on its maiden flight on April 4, 1983, and flew nine missions before the accident for which it is best known. The Space Shuttle orbiter exploded over Cape Canaveral, Fla., on January 28, 1986, killing all seven crew members on board. The Challenger was NASA’s second Space Shuttle after the Columbia.
